Content Descriptions

Processes and Production Skills - Generate, develop and communicate design ideas and processes for audiences using appropriate technical terms and graphical representation in techniques (ACTDEP025)

Knowledge and Understanding - Investigate characteristics and properties of a range of materials, systems, components, tools and equipment and evaluate the impact of their use (ACTDEK023)

General Capabilities

Literacy

  • comprehend, navigate, read and view, interpret and analyse learning area texts

  • compose texts - written, visual and multimodal learning area texts

  • use knowledge of text structures

  • understand how visual elements create meaning

  • understand learning area vocabulary

Numeracy

  • using spatial reasoning

Critical and Creative Thinking

  • pose questions, organise and process, identify and clarify information and ideas

  • apply logic and reasoning, evaluate procedures and outcomes, and draw conclusions and design a course of action

  • imagine possibilities and connect ideas, consider alternatives, and seek solutions and put ideas into action

  • reflecting on thinking and processes

Cross-curriculum Priorities

Sustainability - Students will analyse two materials, tools or pieces of equipment and discuss if their progress/development has had a negative or positive effect on the sustainability of the environment. Students will use this knowledge to plan possible future changes to the 2 implements.

Key Ideas

Creating preferred futures - students are required to choose 2 design solutions (tools, equipment, materials) used by a pioneer family and use critical and creative thinking skills to consider how current day solutions compare and how perceived future solutions will progress. Therefore, students will be required to analyse their chosen items based on past, current and future solutions.

Design thinking - students are required to understand that design thinking involves strategies for understanding design needs and opportunities, visualising and generating creative and innovative ideas, planning, and evaluating and analysing solutions.

Computational thinking - students are required to use computational skills as they consider materials, tools and equipment, as they plan, design and create a house plan on paper, followed by creating a similar solution using Minecraft
