  1. Discuss and define Pioneer families - add a definition to a word wall created for this subject

  2. Watch Video - Pioneer Times - discuss materials, tools and equipment found and used inside and outside the home - evaluate their use

  3. Use real-life versions of the old and new tools (e.g. kettle or iron) to compare materials made from - create a Venn diagram for this - have students do their own venn diagram on another object

  4. Create a picture area on the word wall for visuals of 'then and now' materials, tools and equipment found - add pioneer visuals to 'then' area

  5. Have students write something about what they have learnt in their journal or turn to a buddy for Think, Pair, Share about lesson

  1. Discussion - compare pioneer family materials, tools and equipment with present day versions (include discussion on environmental sustainability and evaluate uses of tools)

  3. Independent activity - students pick 2 items (material, tool and/or equipment) to analyse and compare - record notes and ideas in their journal - include labeled pictures (teacher to leave feedback on student ideas prior to next lesson
